Triptrotters Try Their Hand at Squid Fishing

Have you ever been squid fishing? These Triptrotters have. Our latest TRIPup in Hong Kong took place in Junk Bay on boat large enough to fit the 50 lucky people who bought tickets before they were sold out. Squid fishers dropped hooks –without bait– and shined bright lights onto the dark ocean waters. Before long, masses of baby squids swam to the lights, where they were hooked and caught.

“Although it wasn’t squid fishing season, we still got around 20 squids,” Local Advisor Annie Gillman said. “My friends even caught one of the biggest squids that night, it was around 10 inches.”

During the four-hour outing, participants enjoyed the night air as they socialized with new friends and danced to the music, all in the backdrop of the gorgeous Hong Kong skyline.

“It was a great atmosphere, very relaxing and everyone had a lot of fun,” Gillman said, “[and] we had a good mix of ex-pats, locals, summer abroad students, and travelers.”

Triptrotters from the United States, Denmark, Spain, and China were in attendance.
